One Cigarette a Day Raises the Risk of Heart Disease

"Smoking raises the risk of developing many persistent health problems, including atherosclerosis, a condition in which fatty deposits build up inside arteries, thereby raising the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. Consequently, the risk of heart disease in smokers is double that of non-smokers. "

Cigarette smoking has been around for a long time, however today we have a better understanding of the damage it does to our bodies. According to a 2015 Center for Disease Control study, 36.5 million Americans over the age of 18 smoke cigarettes.

Cigarette smoking has been proven to lead to heart disease, stroke, cancer, COPD, diabetes, and so much more. There are over 16 million people living with theses diseases due to smoking. In addition to this, each year smoking claims the lives of 7 million people worldwide. Cigarettes and other tobacco products are the only known legal drugs that kill it's users. According to the American Heart Association, ceasing cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death.

Those who acquire a disease from cigarette smoking do not only include those who smoke a pack a day, but those who only smoke one or two cigarettes a day. A study, done by a research group from the University College London in the United Kingdom, found that a large portion of coronary heart disease risk comes just from only a couple cigarettes a day. Decreasing the amount of cigarettes being smoked a day is a step in the right direction, however you will continue to be at a greater risk until you completely stop. Read more HERE.
